Products & Fibres
What makes alpaca socks different from regular wool socks?
Alpaca fibre is hollow-core, which makes it lighter and warmer than standard wool at the same thickness. It contains no lanolin, so it's naturally hypoallergenic and gentler on sensitive skin. It also resists odour better than most fibres and pills significantly less than merino or cashmere. The result is a sock that feels noticeably softer, lasts longer, and performs better across seasons.
Are your products really made in Britain?
Yes. Our socks are knitted in British mills with decades of experience in fine-gauge natural fibre production. We're committed to British manufacture because the quality standard is measurably higher — and because we can work directly with the people making our products.
Which sock should I choose — Alpaca Everyday or Alpaca Bed Lounge?
The Everyday Sock has a finer, more structured knit suited to wearing with shoes — office, casual, or smart-casual. The Bed Lounge Sock has a thicker, softer knit designed for warmth and comfort at home. If you're after one pair that does both, start with the Everyday. If you want something specifically for evenings or colder nights indoors, the Lounge Sock is the one.
How should I care for my socks?
Hand wash is best. If machine washing, use a cold wool cycle (30°C maximum) inside a mesh bag, with a wool-safe detergent. Always lay flat to dry — never tumble dry. Full guidance by fibre is on our Care Guide.
What sizes do you offer?
Our socks come in three sizes: S (UK 4–7), M (UK 7.5–9.5), and L (UK 10–11.5). A full size guide is available on the Sock Size Guide page.
Sustainability & Ethics
Are your products sustainable?
We believe the most sustainable product is one that lasts. By using premium natural fibres and manufacturing to a high standard, we produce items designed to stay in use for years rather than seasons. Natural fibres are biodegradable and renewable. British manufacture reduces our supply chain and allows us to maintain quality control at every step.
Where does your alpaca fibre come from?
We source Peruvian alpaca fibre from the highland regions of Peru, where Huacaya alpacas produce the finest quality fleece. The fibre is then spun and knitted in Britain.
Gifting
Do your products make good gifts?
Yes — our socks are a popular gift choice precisely because they're useful, long-lasting, and a noticeable step up from what most people buy themselves. Orders arrive in clean, minimal packaging suited to gifting. If you need help choosing, email us at hello@halfbritish.com.
