Why "Made in Britain" Still Matters (And How to Spot the Real Thing)
Made in Britain has become a label that some brands use loosely — a last button sewn in a UK facility, a box ticked for marketing purposes. It's worth being precise about what it actually means and why the distinction matters.
What genuine British manufacturing means
At its best, British manufacturing means skilled workers, maintained knowledge, quality standards that have been refined over generations, and proximity that allows a brand to maintain real oversight of how things are made. It means being able to visit a mill, see the machines running, and understand every stage of production.
It does not mean outsourcing production and putting a Union Jack on the packaging.
Why it produces better products
The mills half british works with have been producing socks and knitwear for decades. The knowledge held in those facilities — about fibre behaviour, machine calibration, finishing techniques — can't be replicated quickly. It's accumulated craft, and it produces measurably better results than factories optimised purely for volume and cost.
Our Peruvian Alpaca Everyday Socks and Fine Gauge Merino Wool Socks are made in these mills. The quality is inseparable from the place of manufacture.
How to spot the real thing
Ask where the product is actually made — not where it's designed or distributed, but physically manufactured. Ask which mill, if it's clothing or textiles. Look for brands that can answer this clearly without hesitation. Vague claims about "British quality" or "inspired by British heritage" with no specifics are a signal.
Transparency about manufacturing is one of the things half british is deliberate about. Our Our Craft page explains the process honestly.
The broader argument
Supporting British manufacturing has ripple effects: it maintains skills that would otherwise be lost, supports communities that depend on these industries, and creates an accountability that offshore production doesn't allow. These aren't abstract points — they're practical reasons why made in Britain produces better things and why it's worth seeking out.
