Behind the Scenes: How half british Started

Starting a brand is never as straightforward as it looks from the outside. There are late nights, endless decisions, and a fair amount of trial and error. But there's also something energising about building something you truly believe in — from the ground up.

The idea

half british began with a simple question: what if essentials could be better? Not more complicated, not trend-driven — just better. Better fibres. Better design. Better experience from the moment you open the packaging to the moment you put them on.

The starting point was socks. Not because they're glamorous, but because they're universal. Everyone wears them. Most people barely think about them. And that indifference felt like an opportunity.

Why alpaca, why Peru

Growing up in Peru, alpaca was part of everyday life — not as a luxury, but as a practical, trusted material. When I moved to Britain and started thinking seriously about what half british could be, alpaca was an obvious starting point. It's one of the finest natural fibres in the world, and yet it remains underrepresented in British fashion.

Our Peruvian Alpaca Everyday Socks and Peruvian Alpaca Lounge Socks are the direct result of that thinking — sourced from Peru, made in Britain.

Why Britain

Britain has a long history of textile manufacturing. There are still mills here that combine deep craft knowledge with precision machinery — places that take pride in what they produce. Working with them wasn't just a quality decision; it was a values decision.

Sourcing and manufacturing with intention is part of what half british stands for. Read more about the British sockmaking process from yarn to heel, and why made in Britain still matters.

What comes next

The sock was a beginning, not a destination. Half british is building a range of essentials — each one made with the same level of care, the same materials philosophy, and the same belief that the things closest to your body deserve more attention than they usually get.
