Why I Started half british™
The short answer: I couldn't find what I was looking for.
I wanted socks that were genuinely good — made from real materials, built to last, not trend-driven. Something that felt considered rather than convenient. I looked at what was available and found a market dominated by either cheap commodity products or expensive designer names where you were paying mostly for the logo. The space in between — quality without the branding overhead — felt empty.
The gap in the market
Good materials exist. British manufacturing exists. The knowledge of how to make something properly exists. What was missing was a brand that combined these things and made them accessible — without the pretension, without the markup for a heritage name, and without compromising on what actually matters.
That's what half british is trying to be.
Why start with socks
Socks are the most-worn item in most people's wardrobes. They take the most punishment. They're replaced most frequently. And they're the item most people invest the least thought in. Starting there felt right — if you can make the most overlooked item genuinely excellent, it makes a point about everything else in the range.
Our Peruvian Alpaca Everyday Socks are the first answer to that question. Natural fibre, British made, designed for daily use over years rather than months.
The personal thread
Growing up between Peru and Britain gave me a different perspective on both. In Peru, alpaca wasn't exotic — it was practical. In Britain, craft manufacturing wasn't nostalgic — it was ongoing, alive in mills that still do things properly. Combining those two things felt like an obvious starting point that somehow hadn't been done in the way I wanted.
What comes next
The range is expanding — gradually, deliberately, with the same level of care. Each new product goes through the same process: what's the best material? What's the most considered way to make it? Will this still be the right thing to own in five years?
Our knitwear collection is the next chapter — lambswool cardigans, scarves, and more — following the same logic as the socks.
